Mast and tower service – what should I know?

Radio masts and towers are high-risk construction equipment. A potential failure (fall) may result in significant losses or a threat to life - therefore, every effort should be made to ensure that your mast equipment is in the best possible condition.

Aluminum masts they are very resistant to corrosion, but not very resistant to frost cracking if water gets into them. Once a season (every 12 months), it is best to inspect them in early spring for any cracks in the structure. In this respect, AluPro machines are specially protected with a drainage system, but this is one of the things that can go wrong.

In case of steel structures there is also the issue of anti-corrosion protection. When replacing screws/clamps, it is worth paying attention to the type of steel/material so that the difference in electrochemical potential of the materials used does not significantly accelerate point corrosion at the point of contact.

The second thing is guy ropes. Just a few years ago, in smaller structures, the use of galvanized steel ropes fi=3mm was standard. Today, after a few years, when corrosion has set in, their strength may be insufficient (we know of several service stories where the break occurred as a result of strong pulling on such a rope, because someone grabbed it while walking). We recommend checking and replacing the ropes, if necessary, with a minimum diameter of 4 mm and of good quality (reputable companies, certificate, properly galvanized).

The third thing is tension. The ropes become stretched over time (subject to thousands of cycles of wind stress). Their preload should be adjusted and the clamps, turnbuckles and anchors checked for corrosion or damaged threads.

Aluminum towers they are definitely less service-intensive. The inspection consists of checking for frost cracks, tightening the screws on the flanges and replacing them if they are heavily corroded.
